Derekoy School Project

After meeting with teachers from Samsun during Space Camp Izmir, Friends of Anatolia has decided to give one mini grant to Derekoy Elementary School in this province in 2006.

The Town

Derekoy is a town within the Samsun province of Turkey. Samsun, which is known as the city where Kemal Ataturk had launched his campaign against foreign invaders in 1919, is located at the Northern part of Turkey, on the Black Sea coast. Mild winters, high rainfall, emerald colored landscape with plateuos and valleys are among the main characteristics of the region. Derekoy is a town in 19 Mayis district of Samsun.

The School

The school was first built as a three-classroom building to serve the needs of the town by then. Later on, it went through several renovations and started to teach for the students from surrounding villages, as well.

Recently, the Turkish ministry of education pledged to send computers to the school, however, the school administration in required to built a computer lab within its existing budget.

The Project

Since the resources of this school is not enough to built a new computer lab, the school administration has launched a campaign to encourage parents and other philanthropic individuals in the town to donate and volunteer to create a lab.

Friends of Anatolia first contacted the representatives of the school during the 2006 Space Camp Izmir event in April. After a brief evaluation of the school, a mini grant is pledged to be used for the construction of computer lab.
